Best Onboarding Gifts for New Employees

Make the Welcome Personal

The best onboarding gift packages for new employees start with a simple question: What will this person actually use?

At Elegantly Personalized Gifts, I help companies choose personalized gifts around their employees’ workdays. A person who travels regularly has different needs from someone with a permanent desk. Someone who works primarily on a computer may get more use from a wireless charger than a writing pad.

The message I want a welcome gift to communicate is: “You’re important. You matter. You are an individual. Welcome to the team. We see you.”

That message becomes more meaningful when the items are useful, the quality is considered, and the employee’s name is included.

Two New Employee Gift Sets We Recently Created

Two recent company projects show how a welcome package can take different forms while communicating the same thoughtfulness.

For one company, we personalized a YETI mug, coasters, pens, and a leatherette padfolio with a writing pad. The set brought together drinkware and writing accessories for everyday use.

For another company, we created a padfolio with the company logo and employee’s name, a tumbler, two personalized pens, and a marble and acacia wood desk nameplate. The nameplate holds two pens and business cards, giving it a practical purpose alongside the personalization.

A desk nameplate is one of my favorite suggestions for someone with a dedicated desk. It gives their name a place in the workplace and makes the welcome feel specific to them.

These are examples of packages we have made. The right combination for your employee may look different.

Choose Gifts Around the Employee’s Workday

Before recommending products, I ask who will receive them, what their role involves, and where they work. Are they traveling? Do they have a desk? Do they rely heavily on technology? What industry are they in?

A padfolio may be useful for someone who takes handwritten notes in meetings. A person who does nearly everything digitally may appreciate a power bank or wireless charging accessory more. Coasters make sense for someone with a desk or home workspace, but I would give them less priority for an employee who spends most of the day on the road.

Drinkware is a versatile starting point. Whether someone drinks coffee, tea, water, or a protein shake, a good-quality tumbler can have a place in their day. I still consider how they will use it when choosing the style.

I also consider the role and the occasion. For a director or lawyer, I may recommend a premium leather padfolio and a higher-quality pen. For another employee, a personalized notebook may be a better fit. Every employee deserves a thoughtful gift; the selection can reflect different responsibilities and needs.

My approach is to show clients the premium possibilities first, then refine the package based on their priorities and budget. That helps us make deliberate choices about the items and quality they value most.

Three Onboarding Gift Package Ideas

These combinations are starting points for a conversation. Product options and availability are confirmed when we discuss your order.

Employee’s work setup Suggested personalized gifts Why I would choose them
Primarily works at a desk Tumbler, laptop bag, wireless keyboard and mouse or a mouse pad with wireless charging, and a desk nameplate Supports their daily workspace and gives their name a visible place at their desk.
Travels frequently Tumbler, bag, luggage tags, and a passport holder for international travel or a padfolio for meetings Combines everyday drinkware with accessories they can use on the road.
Works remotely Tumbler, mouse pad with wireless charging, coasters, and a bag Adds useful personal touches to a home workspace, with a bag for days away from home.

For frequent travelers, I particularly like personalized luggage tags with a name and company logo. For international travelers, a passport holder is another option. A padfolio that holds a writing pad, pen, and business cards can suit someone who takes notes during meetings or while waiting at the airport.

For desk-based employees, choose technology accessories around the equipment they actually use. A keyboard, mouse, or charging accessory should suit their setup before we consider how to personalize it.

Should Welcome Gifts Include a Name, a Logo, or Both?

My preference is to include the employee’s name whenever the recipient is known. A name shows that the gift was intended for that individual.

A company logo can sit alongside the name, with placement and sizing chosen to suit the item. The result can acknowledge both the person and the team they are joining.

The exception is when a company orders gifts in bulk without knowing who will receive them. Logo-only items are practical for that purpose, as they are for general promotional giveaways.

We do not offer a program where companies purchase logo-branded stock and have us add names later as part of the original order. An employee can contact us separately about bringing an item in for paid engraving. We would first confirm whether the item is suitable and schedule an appointment. Our Charlotte studio does not accept walk-ins.

The Biggest Mistake: One Package for Everyone

The biggest mistake I see is assuming one gift package will suit every employee.

Pens and writing pads can be excellent choices for people who use them. But including them automatically can miss an opportunity to choose something more relevant. I encourage companies to consider gifts people will reach for repeatedly, such as quality drinkware, chargers, or power banks.

One practical approach is to create a few options by department. An accounting team might appreciate calculators. A technology team might prefer keyboards or mice. Other employees might benefit from a mouse pad with wireless charging. These are ideas to explore with the team rather than assumptions to make solely from a job title.

Different gifts can communicate the same level of care. You can keep a consistent budget while tailoring the contents to how people work.

What Our Clients Appreciate

Our clients have told us they appreciate the usefulness, quality, and finish of the personalized items we create. We have also received repeat orders from clients over the years.

In my experience, putting someone’s name on a useful item makes it feel more personal and worth keeping. A well-made tumbler, desk accessory, or padfolio can remain useful long after the first day of work.

When a company logo is included, continued use can also provide ongoing brand visibility. But for an onboarding gift, I believe the employee’s experience should lead the decision. The package should make them feel seen.

How to Order Personalized Onboarding Gifts

Step one is to complete the Contact form.

We begin by discussing the quantity, products, colors, and whether you want company logos, individual names, or both. We also confirm fonts, personalization sizing, placement, timing, and pickup or shipping needs.

Logo-only orders can move through production easily. Adding individual names requires more time because the personalization changes from person to person and requires more labor involvement from our end.

Please email your logo to isha@elegantlypersonalizedgifts.com as a high-quality PNG with a transparent background or in vector format. Supply the employee names in writing with the exact spelling you want used.

Once the order details are agreed upon, we send an invoice. Full payment is required before we procure the unpersonalized products for your order.

How Much Lead Time Should You Allow?

For specialized product requests, we recommend allowing at least a week to ten days. Many orders can be accommodated within three business days, depending on the items, availability, quantity, and personalization.

Larger orders may require us to procure additional products. Incoming delivery can take three to four days, followed by the time needed for personalization. We confirm the turnaround for your specific order before proceeding. If the gifts need to arrive for an employee’s first day, include that date in your inquiry and allow for shipping time as well.

Pickup, Shipping, and Gift Packaging

Companies can arrange pickup at our appointment-based Charlotte studio, or we can ship the completed items to the company. We typically use UPS.

Shipping is generally invoiced separately once the package weight and volume are known. That invoice must be paid before shipment, and we email tracking information after the order ships.

Some products come neatly packaged in their own boxes, ready for your company to place in a gift basket or gift box. We do not offer gift wrapping, assembled gift packaging, or direct distribution to individual employees. Please arrange those finishing touches separately if you want a fully presented welcome package.
