Perfume Engraving: What to Know Before You Buy the Bottle

A favorite perfume can become a personal gift with just a name, a date, or a few meaningful words. But the bottle itself matters as much as the message. Before a customer buys a perfume for engraving, I ask them to text me a link or photo so I can look at its shape, material, labels, and available space.
At Elegantly Personalized Gifts in Charlotte, I have personalized bottles from brands including Gucci, Chanel, Tory Burch, YSL, and Burberry. I have engraved gifts for birthdays and weddings, with wording such as “Maid of Honor,” “Mother of the Bride,” and “Bride.” I have also added names, dates, and short religious phrases. Here is what I want customers to know before bringing in a bottle.
Which perfume bottles can be engraved?
.
I prefer a sturdy glass bottle with a flat surface and enough clear space for the wording. A flat face lets me position the text away from the perfume’s existing label or decoration. I do not take cylindrical bottles or unusual shapes for laser engraving, and I do not engrave plastic bottles. I also decline bottles with unknown coatings when I cannot determine whether they are suitable for the process. Every client-provided bottle is reviewed individually.
The brand name alone does not tell me whether a bottle will work. Different perfumes, and even different bottle sizes, have different shapes and layouts. Send me the specific product link before purchasing it for personalization. That gives us a chance to discuss what will fit before you invest in the gift.
What can you put on a perfume bottle?

Names, initials, dates, and short wording are my usual requests. Wedding customers often choose a role such as “Maid of Honor” or “Mother of the Groom.” A birthday customer might choose a name or a meaningful short phrase. I keep designs simple so the personalization complements the bottle instead of crowding it.
Space determines placement. Sometimes the front works; sometimes the back or side is better. We also have to keep the engraving clear of any existing labels, stickers, or decoration. I discuss placement and show customers font choices before proceeding. Some lettering, especially a phrase in all capitals, reads better in one font than another. I use the fonts I know engrave cleanly on the bottle.
I ask every customer to text or email the exact wording. I copy it from the message rather than typing it from a verbal request. Please check the spelling and year carefully: engraving on glass is permanent and cannot be erased if a date is wrong.
Two orders that changed the plan
One customer brought me four differently shaped perfume bottles as birthday gifts for her friends. She had names, dates, and Bible phrases in mind. We looked at each bottle and worked out which wording would actually fit. She was flexible about which friend received each bottle, so we could move phrases to better-suited bottles. We also changed one font when its cursive letters did not look right with all-capital wording. Some text went on the back or side when the front had no room. She loved the finished gifts.
In another order, a customer wanted a bottle for the mother of the bride and one for the maid of honor to look identical. One bottle was much smaller and already had two labels. It could not hold the same layout without crowding the text or risking contact with a label. One of those bottles cost nearly $175 before tax, so I would not take that chance. We talked through different placements and kept the font consistent, even though the layouts could not match exactly. This is why I prefer to inspect the actual bottles before confirming a design.
What does engraving look like on glass?
.
On plain glass, the engraving generally looks frosted or opaque, rather than bright white. It has a slightly coarse texture that comes from engraving the glass. I clean the finished area as well as I can, but the texture is part of the result. Appearance varies with the bottle surface, the available space, and the font.
I do not fill glass engraving with gold, silver, or other colors. If you want color, ask about printing instead. The available approach depends on the bottle, so share the product with me first. For some bottles I cannot engrave, a printed personalization may be an option.

Timing and price
My standard turnaround for perfume personalization is three business days. Select same-day and while-you-wait appointments may be available when scheduled in advance. For those appointments, send the exact wording ahead of time and settle the placement, font, and any printing color before arriving.
As a current guide, a name engraving may be around $30, while a name and date on one side may be $35. A phrase or quote is often $35–$40, depending on its length and placement. Engraving a separate second side is an additional charge; for example, adding a quote to the back can add about $35. The current rush fee is $15 extra for engraving or $20 extra for printing, subject to change. I give an accurate quote after reviewing the bottle and the exact request.
The easiest way to begin is to send the perfume link or photos of the actual bottle, the name or wording you want, your preferred placement, and the date you need it. I will let you know whether the bottle is a good candidate and what simple layout will make the gift look its best.
